Method4 steps · about 10 min

  1. Step 1: Pour the freshly brewed double espresso, about ¼ cup, into a cocktail shaker or a jar with a tight-fitting lid. Add optional sugar to taste: about 2 tsp for medium sweetness or about 4 tsp for very sweet coffee, choosing one amount. Add three ice cubes, seal tightly and shake until the coffee is cold and frothy and the ice has mostly melted.

Uses A freshly brewed double espresso, about ¼ cup (the author also gives about 2 fl oz) · Sugar to taste, optional · Three ice cubes for shaking

  2. Step 2: Fill a tall, narrow glass with fresh ice and pour in all the chilled, frothy coffee. Add the scant ¼ cup cold water. For a milkier drink, omit this water and add milk in the next step instead.

Uses Fresh ice to fill the serving glass · Chilled shaken espresso and melted ice · Scant ¼ cup cold water

  3. Step 3: If using milk, gently pour a dash of your chosen milk over the coffee without stirring, so the foam remains. If you omitted the cold water for the milkier option, add milk to your liking instead. Otherwise leave the coffee black.

Uses Iced espresso, with or without the optional dilution water · A dash of milk, optional: whole, low-fat or unflavored plant-based

  4. Step 4: Serve the one glass immediately with a straw, keeping the coffee frothy.
