Method9 steps

  1. Step 1: If choosing the source’s recommended soak, soak the 200 grams dried black-eyed peas in the separate three cups water for two to three hours, then drain. If skipping soaking, rinse and drain the dried peas instead. The peas themselves are required.

Optional soak black-eyed peas, then drain · 180 minUses 200 g dried black-eyed peas (source 1 cup), optionally soaked · 3 cups water for optional pea soaking; discard afterward

  2. Step 2: Press the saute button on the instant pot. Once it displays hot, add the oil (2 teaspoons) and then add the bay leaf (1) and cumin seeds (1/2 teaspoon). Let the seeds sizzle for few seconds.

Uses 2 teaspoons oil (10 ml, I used avocado oil) · 1 bay leaf · 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds

  3. Step 3: Add the one cup ready frozen onion-tomato masala, such as fourquarter-cup frozen portions. This already contains its onion, tomato, ginger, garlic and seasonings.

Uses Oil-tempered bay leaf and cumin · 1 cup onion tomato masala (frozen)

  4. Step 4: Add the one-and-a-half to two cups curry water and stir while the frozen masala melts and disperses. Scrape the base clean of any stuck food before pressure cooking.

Uses Tempering with added ready frozen masala · 1.5-2 cups water (12-16 oz, depending on how thin you want the curry)

  5. Step 5: Add the red chili powder (1/4 teaspoon), garam masala (1/4 teaspoon) and salt (1/2 teaspoon).

Uses Thinned melted ready onion-tomato masala with water · 1/4 teaspoon red chili powder (or to taste) · 1/4 teaspoon garam masala · 1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)

  6. Step 6: Stir in the prepared drained black-eyed peas.

Uses Seasoned masala cooking liquid · Prepared rinsed drained peas, optionally soaked

  7. Step 7: Close according to the cooker’s instructions and cook at high pressure for twelve minutes. Let the pressure release fully naturally; open only once fully depressurized. Check the peas are tender and continue cooking if needed, particularly if unsoaked or older.

Pressure Cook Peas · 12 minUses Peas in seasoned thin cooking liquid

  8. Step 8: Open the lid and stir the curry. Add in the cilantro. Squeeze in some fresh lemon juice.

Uses Tender cooked pressure-released black-eyedpea curry · cilantro (for garnish) · Fresh juice from a small lemon, to taste; amount unspecified

  9. Step 9: Serve with separately prepared rice or quinoa.

    Uses Finished cilantro-lemon black-eyedpea curry
