  1. Step 1: Grease a slice tin and line with baking paper, leaving excess on the sides to lift out slice once set.

  2. Step 2: Pre-heat oven to moderate (180 degrees celsius, fan-forced).

  3. Step 3: Melt the 125 grams base butter and let it cool slightly, then combine with the brown sugar (1 cup), lightly beaten egg (1) and first teaspoon vanilla (1 teaspoon) in a mixing bowl.

Uses 1 cup brown sugar · 125 grams butter, melted · 1 egg (lightly beaten) · 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  4. Step 4: Choose either the sifted self-raising flour (1 1/4 cups) or the plain flour sifted with its two teaspoons baking powder. Stir the chosen flour mixture and rolled oats (1 1/2 cups) into the base mixture.

Uses Prepared base butter-sugar-egg mixture · 1 1/4 cups self-raising flour, sifted, for base · 1 1/2 cups rolled oats · 1 1/4 cups plain flour only for the self-raising-flour substitute · 2 teaspoons baking powder only with the plain-flour substitute
