Step 1: Preheat the oven to 400°F (205°C). Put a baking sheet on the rack below the deep 9×9-inch baking dish, or use it to support the dish and catch any overflow. Peel and core all four apples, then cut them into even thick slices.
Step 2: In the deep 9×9-inch baking dish, mix all the brown sugar, flour, baking powder, measured salt and measured ¼ teaspoon cinnamon together.
Step 3: Add all the prepared apple slices to the dry mixture in the baking dish. Toss until the slices are coated.
Step 4: Mix the half cup milk with the teaspoon vanilla extract, then pour all of this milk mixture over the coated apples.
Step 5: Stir until the apple mixture is evenly moistened and smooth the top. Dot the chosen 2–3 teaspoons butter over the surface.
Step 6: Put the assembled baking dish in the oven with its baking sheet positioned to catch overflow. Carefully pour all two cups boiling water over the top. Do not stir after adding the water.
Step 7: Bake for 40–50 minutes, until the top is golden brown. Check the actual cake and continue if needed; keep the baking sheet below to catch any bubbling overflow.
Step 8: Let the baked apple pudding cake cool slightly, then serve warm as nine portions. Add only an optional sprinkle of the separate finishing cinnamon. The photograph shows whipped cream as an optional serving accompaniment.
