Step 1: Heat the 1–2 tbsp olive oil in a large pot over medium-high heat and saute the 454 g lean ground beef until it starts to brown.
Step 2: Add onions (1 medium). Continue to sauté onions until they are translucent.
Step 3: Add the frozen cut green beans (2 lb) and peeled cubed raw potatoes (5 cups). This primary method uses raw potatoes.
Step 4: Add just enough broth to almost cover veggies. Scrape up any browned bits at the bottom of the pot.
Step 5: Add savory and Vegeta and stir.
Step 6: Bring to a boil, lower to medium-low, cover and simmer about 15 minutes, until beans and potatoes are fully tender and the beef is cooked through. Continue to the endpoint if needed.
Step 7: Stir in just enough instant mashed potato flakes to thicken the broth of the soup, if using. Soup will thicken slightly more as it rests after adding the potato flakes.
Step 8: Taste and season with salt, freshly ground pepper and optional extra summer savory. Allow for the salt already in Vegeta and broth. Serve hot.
