  1. Step 1: Grease a 1.7 litre (3 pint) microwave-safe pudding basin with the separate teaspoon of butter (1 tsp), or oil. Dust the basin with the separate tablespoon of flour (1 tbsp), shaking out the excess.

Uses 1 tsp butter (or oil) · 1 tbsp flour

  2. Step 2: Add the golden syrup (75 g) to the bottom of the bowl.

    Uses 75 g golden syrup

  3. Step 3: Cream together the butter (170 g) and sugar (170 g) until pale and fluffy.

    Uses 170 g butter (unsalted) · 170 g caster sugar (superfine)

  4. Step 4: Whisk the eggs (3) one at a time, then beat them and the vanilla (1 tsp) into the prepared creamed butter and sugar.

Uses 3 eggs · 1 tsp vanilla extract · 170 g butter and 170 g caster sugar creamed until fluffy

  5. Step 5: Mix the baking powder (1½ tsp) into the measured batter flour (170 g) and gently fold into the prepared egg-enriched mixture with a large metal spoon.

Uses 170 g flour (plain/all purpose) · 1½ tsp baking powder · creamed butter and sugar with three eggs and vanilla beaten in

  6. Step 6: Scrape the complete prepared batter onto the syrup in the prepared basin. Cover loosely with microwave-safe cling film, leaving a small steam vent.

Uses egg mixture with 170 g flour and baking powder folded in · 1.7 litre microwave-safe basin greased with separate teaspoon butter and dusted with separate tablespoon flour, with 75 g syrup in base

  7. Step 7: Microwave the prepared basin on full power for 6 minutes in a 600 W microwave. Check that a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean; if needed, cook for a further minute and check again. Other microwave powers may need a different cooking time. Remove the film carefully because hot steam escapes.

Microwave Pudding · 6 minUses prepared sponge batter over syrup in microwave-safe basin, loosely covered with suitable wrap

  8. Step 8: Let the cooked pudding rest for 2 minutes. Put a rimmed plate over the basin and carefully invert so the plate catches the hot syrup.

Rest Pudding · 2 minUses sponge microwaved until a central skewer comes out clean
