Step 1: Preheat a compatible air-fryer oven to 375°F (191°C) on Air Fry. Check that the bird fits your basket, spit or tray and respects the appliance’s weight/clearance limits.
Step 2: In a small bowl mix together olive oil (¼ cup), paprika, salt (1 teaspoon), and pepper (½ teaspoon).
Step 3: Slide your fingers between the meat and the skin, and working slowly, separate as much of the skin from the meat as you can reach. Scoop in some of the oil mixture, while pushing under the skin with your fingers.
Step 4: Massage the remaining seasoning over the whole chicken’s outside, including underneath.
Step 5: Place the prepared chicken in its compatible rotisserie basket, or truss it tightly and mount on the spit according to appliance instructions. Make sure it rotates freely and the basket lid is secure. If using an air-fryer tray instead, turn the chicken halfway through the main roasting time.
Step 6: Air-fry at 375°F (191°C) about 1 hour as an initial guide. Measure without touching bone: the author’s thigh target is 170°F (77°C), and the thickest breast must reach at least 165°F (74°C). Continue cooking as needed; the time alone does not establish doneness.
Step 7: Optional crisping: put the cooked chicken on a compatible tray and air-fry at 400°F (204°C) for 5 minutes, turn, then cook about 5 minutes more. Watch closely to avoid burning. This adds about 10 minutes beyond the main cooking time.
Step 8: Remove any kitchen twine or rotisserie hardware, carve the cooked chicken and serve aboutfour portions.
