Step 1: Dilute the 2 tsp tamarind paste in 300 ml water and add the 1 tsp salt. Soak the sliced tempeh (150 g) in this mixture for 15 minutes.
Step 2: Meanwhile, prepare the rest of the ingredients.
Step 3: Drain the tempeh, discard its soaking liquid and pat the slices dry.
Step 4: In a wok, heat up the vegetable oil (4 tbsp) over medium-high heat.
Step 5: Fry the tempeh until golden brown, about 5 minutes. Set aside.
Step 6: Keep the fried tempeh aside. Lower the heat under the same wok and add the sliced onion to the remaining oil. Sauté until soft and slightly brown, about 5 minutes.
Step 7: Add the garlic (3 cloves) and all the chillies. Saute for 2 minutes.
Step 8: Add the light soy sauce (4 tbsp), the 50ml water, and the fried tempeh.
Step 9: Increase the heat and stir until all the liquid evaporates, about 5-8 minutes.
Step 10: The tempe is ready!
